Our exchange ceased after the evening of November 27th, 2018. *he called most days and made up for those which he missed. - - Alibi emerged in the aftermath of Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings, when his meticulous ‘forward and backward-looking’ high school calendar was presented (and accepted) as his alibi against the sexual assault allegations made by Dr. Christina Blasey-Ford, I began thinking critically about my own, disciplined calendar-keeping and journaling practice. For years, I anticipated and recorded my days with such devoutness that I declined social engagements, dreading the immensity of recounting and representation at the end of each day. This project considers the intentionality required to sustain a daily practice of self-documentation, and the authority such records are granted. I volunteered myself to be somebody else’s scribe—recording days that might otherwise go unrecorded and unreflected. It wasn’t about making beautiful images, but sticking to a methodology and taking responsibility for what we’d done. Our agitation in the moment translates into a certain somberness. One way of going nowhere is to remain within Corporate America, where everything looks the same. You can drive halfway across the country or more before beginning to feel something new. A veil of familiarity. We assured ourselves that if we didn’t get what we needed out of the trip to make a compelling work, we could walk our cameras down Brownsville Road and fill in the gaps. There were no whims. We pulled the car over only twice. For five days we drove in a particular but arbitrary direction. Artifacts of satellite television. Clusters of black balloons lurking at the end of hidden driveways. A thousand golden arches. Two people who have never gone on vacations. Under the guise of leisure we have labored over the amorphous journey. We decided that, for us, stillness was an additive process. We were neither the Dorothea Lange nor the Migrant Worker. What started as a critical engagement with the bonafide American Road Trip now looks and sounds a lot like the last love song for a different way of travel. like stealing to watch another town’s fireworks—on accident, in passing, on the long, dark drive home from my grandparents’ house. The rural Pennsylvania sky asserted itself for miles. Between staggered Fourth of July celebrations, fairground programming, and back-woods exercises of freedom, fireworks seasoned and seared the sky all summer long.As soon as the weather turned, Phantom Fireworks would pitch retail tents on the Ohio state line and prey on the patriotism of Pennsylvanians. Beaver County heads-of-household made the forty minute drive to spend a couple hundred dollars on novelty aerial packs. They make a day out of it: stopping in Rogers for the seasonal flea market, bringing home a sick puppy or a pocket knife for each of the kids. Carton cigarettes in East Liverpool. Every year my mom would load a couple packs of sparklers into her cart at the Big Lots for us to launder our signatures and bad words in their smoke trails at dusk. It was enough to tide us over until the show put on by the Rochester Borough.The evening of the fireworks, families slowly got drawn out of their homes. Overcome by some shared American sentimentality, we made like moths toward the light. Uncle Sam puppeted mothers and fathers through their homes, gathering bug spray, the soiled afghan that was kept around for moments like these, and a light jacket for everyone. It was never a rush. Everyone left home at dusk to wait another forty minutes in place. The atmosphere of the evening inextricably characterized by a sweater that you’d slip your arms through without pulling it over your head. Nothing to do but make the acquaintance of the lightning bugs. I know the smell of hands that have been catching bugs in the summer so well that I cannot brush the hair out from my face after working outside without being struck by the distinct, antagonistic boredom of waiting for the fireworks to begin. All of the adults came back into their human condition from the lesser species they were when they left home. Their irritability and impatience always caught up to them, but nobody ever moved. The long, polite monosyllables shared between neighbors who hadn’t seen another since ‘this time last year’ created a buzz enough to make you think the cicadas came out--if it weren’t for the silence that came with the first plume in the sky. Just a test. It was always another twenty minutes before the next. A period of time fertile unlike any other for a child to ask a parent the largest, most difficult questions of their life. Questions about God, race, or infinite spans of time and space. If you didn’t stay to enjoy it, you’d still have to hear it, so you might as well have seen what the racket was all about. It’s a liberating cacophony, like pouring twenty pounds of LEGOs onto the floor and not the broken starter on your dad’s car.Fireworks drug our senses. The incongruous speeds of light and sound take you out of time. There was always a peripheral knowledge of men and women setting them off from the river, when the show started late or there was a misfire. But once the spectacle built like a glacier that was calving, and you became overwhelmed by the particular way a firework travels through your esophagus before revealing itself in front of your eyes, it felt truer to say that fireworks materialize out of the stars than from off a barge. You can look for people and patterns in fireworks much like you can with clouds, but I always chose to be bewildered by them. We always watched the fireworks from the end of our street that was closed to traffic because it wasn’t worth it to the town to maintain. My mother speculated that there were pretty good views from the Giant Eagle lot, or at the old Saint Cecelia’s. When a house up the block got condemned and demolished, the empty lot like a missing tooth in the sneer of Rochester’s borough over the Ohio River, she said, “That would have been such a good place to watch the fireworks.” Rochester stopped being able to afford fireworks celebrations of its own, and the town over didn’t have a show nearly as good--not least of all because it was a hassle. We would have to get into the car and find a vantage point on the other side of the river, in some place that we’d pass through everyday without ever thinking whether here or there would be a good spot for watching the sky spit fire. A good, democratic fireworks display is one where nobody has to leave their neighborhood.When the fireworks are not your own, they’re no more than heat lightning. The phenomenon depends on pretense, a dedication to superstition, and the narrative arc of the performance itself. A firework not meant for you is no more than the surface ripples of a stone somebody else skipped across the sky. Fireworks from afar do not fill the whole sky. A firework is anemic without the accompanying, dangerous illusion of fire raining down onto your family and neighbors, without the taste of ash in your gasp.When the fireworks were over, I would stand—trusting that my feet were making contact with the pavement—though my whole body was numb from how I’ve been sitting, and the fireworks stopped telling my heart how to beat. At home, I’d talk my dogs off the ledge, who would remain there for hours, because I raised my voice just like anyone whose ears were ringing. Neighbors would set off their loot for weeks to come, having learned that fireworks don’t keep well in unfinished basements. Unlike those on the long, dark drives home from my grandparents’ house, I would be able to hear but not see them. They sounded like the broken starter on my dad’s car. Nothing to do but grit my teeth and make some noise of my own. If anything were to happen to my parents, there would be no one left who could engage my sister in conversation as she deserves. The McGuire Memorial and the Employment Option Center (EOC) have requested an audio CD containing side-by-side verbal pronunciations of words from my sister’s vocabulary, spoken both by her and by our mother. This recording is intended to function, eventually, as a surrogate—preserving the specificity of her speech and the relational context in which it is understood. Literacy within Juli’s linguistic system is complex and non-commodifiable, and cannot be adequately addressed through commercial or standardized language resources. As her sister, I am initiating an online index that begins to navigate these complexities. It is an incomplete and provisional guide—an impossible one—but a resource nonetheless. She hears us. We have difficulty hearing her. subtitled, animated GIFs The interface includes: -contextualizing conversational video footage. -subtitled GIFs where sign language is used,&nbsp;both&nbsp;standardized by ASL and not. -soundbytes of verbal pronunciations. -footnotes which aim to contextualize and/or&nbsp;categorize the origin of Juli’s verbal and&nbsp;signified representations. The index currently accounts only for Juli’s daily narrative in care and activities. It will be maintained, updated, and streamlined as necessary. Made discreetly, eyes closed or focused elsewhere--in waiting rooms, during phone calls, and when contemplating my to-do list. Sometimes representational, sometimes fully disassociated. It’s a pathological drawing practice, one of blending out darkened areas and hard edges--growth edges. They look like skin rashes, petri dishes, something metastasized, and saltwater relics. Interspersed are the ritualistic first marks I make in the front covers of my notebooks, forever trying to catch the right edge of my mechanical pencil’s soft graphite. They look like edge changes, etched in ice by figure skaters--which look like Pitman Shorthand. father began having in 1989.&nbsp; In May 2023, I recorded my father recounting the dream--about rabbits--which opened into a dialogue about responsibility, obligation, the United States Marine Corps, excerpt D: That recurring dream happened many times that I would have the urge to call my dad and say, “Hey, take care of those rabbits”. I would call my dad every week, on Sundays, he would look out for my call. When I would call him in my dream, I’d say, “Dad, you remember those rabbits…They are being taken care of, right?” J: Did you ever tell him? D: I don’t think I ever told him. I had it so many times. In one dream, we had been there for hours, nice visit and everything, and then we left and I thought…oh my gosh. I forgot to check on the rabbits, and I forgot to even mention it to my dad. Do you think he’ll remember? And I was so concerned. That’s when I would wake up. I was so concerned and I would be so shook up that in the morning I would be soaked. I didn’t know for sure that the rabbits are being cared for. And then, a few nights later, I would have that dream again. And, sometimes, I would say, “Oh my gosh I think I forgot to remind him of the rabbits”. They were just dreams. — J: I came across an old notebook where I wrote that I do not particularly like rabbits, but absolutely hate they way they look when they are hurt. I am not drawn to rabbits, but they’re kind of the last thing I want to see suffer. I am wondering if I am here, with all these rabbits, because of this dream that you had. D: I don’t remember telling you kids the dream, but maybe there was something there that made you feel a certain responsibility toward rabbits. I told the dream a few times, and always, people can relate to it, because people always seem to be worried about something that isn’t theirs, and neglecting the thing that is. There is no peace in that.— D: More and more I see that there are not coincidences. J: Not for everyone, I do not think so. D: I love your point. I guess I am thinking about the people whose hearts cry out for God, who find ourselves in impossible situations to solidify our reliance on God. — D: I thought there were more bad people than good. I did not believe there were more good people than bad. I was in the Marines and had it proven to me that there were more bad people than good people. I was so stressed out. I was devastated. I didn’t want to live anymore, but I didn’t want to disappoint my mother. I wanted to kill myself, but I didn’t want to disappoint my mother. I was looking for anything. I believed in a distant God. I didn’t believe he was a God of love but a God of judgement. I said to God, “Give me a reason to live by morning or I will blow my head off”. I made a deal with God. I was a non-sleeper. I just didn’t sleep. I went into this deep trance. I was in hell, and that was the beginning of months that I did not sleep.&nbsp; I was scared to sleep; I did not dare sleep for fear of going back into that trance. I kept finding myself in these trances that I couldn’t wake up from. — D: [The dream]&nbsp;was life changing because it was so devastating to me. I became extremely responsible to the things that I believed were my responsibility, to the point where no pet is unfed or unwatered around me. No person is just neglected as long as they are in my vicinity, They’re not left out--whether it is conversation, whether it is food, whatever. It really helped me. I do not really respect titles or positions. I see things in reverse of that. The most important people are the people that the world threw away.&nbsp; If I was laying in bed and realized I didn’t check the dogs water dish, or the cat’s water dish when we had the cat, I would have to get up out of bed, run down, and make sure they had water so they would not be thirsty at night if they needed to get up and get a drink. Even though to some people that might be a really stupid thing, its not to me. When we neglect our own responsibilities in life, it is not a small thing. Looking for this notebook today, I am looking at our stuff, and I am so careful about what I gather, because, to me, whatever it is: material, if it is a book, you have to find a place for it you have to dust it, it has a spot in your life. Do you really want to add it to your life, whatever it is? It might look like a beautiful little mini bike to a kid, but it isn’t just to make you happy. It gonna break down, it needs gas, it needs oil, it needs its chain adjusted.— J: You have lost a lot of sleep wondering if the water level is low, but anytime we have had a dog get loose or run away….you never chased after a dog. I would be absolutely frantic. You would instead sit down and pour a bowl of cereal, for example. When I was young, I found it cruel, but I can see it as something else now. You would lose sleep over the water, but once they left the yard, you would sink into the deepest resolve. Is there anything you want to say about dogs running away? D: I love freedom, and that’s part of why I have such a hard time of being so locked into our society. I am all about freedom, for everybody--not more for this guy. I am all about freedom. If you think you should have a better home somewhere else, go ahead. It is dangerous out there. You will learn that too. I remember the cat wanting to run out all the time and it got out one night. In the morning, her eyes were like saucers. She was never quick to leave the house again. I think it’s a lesson pets got to learn. My pets knew I loved them. If they were going to trade my love for whatever else was out there, I knew in my heart they were going to be back. Might not be the same day. J: So it is confidence? D: It is confidence. Confidence that no-one else seems to have when it comes to animals. I got complete confidence in them. I see the love in their eyes. Dogs maybe moreso than any other, though I am seeing more and more in all of creation. Dogs are so faithful. It is part of their nature. Even when their masters are cruel to them, they’re faithful. I see some of that in all creation now. All these animals we did not give credit. One writes letters; the other responds with paintings. Together they form a pact of attentiveness and responsiveness without disclosure. The letter writer believes in the perfect question. The letters are composed with precision and patience, with each line of the stationery drawn, as if the act of writing could be reduced to its structure alone. The paintings consider the anatomy of the eye: capillaries, irises that shift in response to light and environment, and the partial reflections that appear on the eye’s surface. They operate as a laundering of experience—details of the painter’s life and surroundings translated into forms that are infinitely interpretable and therefore safely shared. In this exchange, abstraction becomes a strategy for remaining in touch without incurring the pain of correspondence or the burden of representation, rather, the relationship is sustained by restraint. What Color Are Your Eyes Today? was exhibited as part of Pillow Talk, a group exhibition at The Soil Factory, alongside work from Hazel Key, Jackie Riccio, Josi Valle Ellis, and Rohini Gupta. In cards, snake eyes is a derogatory term: the worst possible result, a complete lack of success.&nbsp; Following in the traditions of stereoscopic photography, diptych image pairs, and contact sheets, I make my photographs monogamous to another. The scale of these images is oppressive. Presented with a loupe for close obsevation, viewers are made into forensic observers. The photographs are evidence, but evidence of what? We think we are being presented with something. Meaning emerges out of their intimate networks.
